Save Nigeria Group, Pastor Tunde Bakare, said on Thursday that Nigerians would continue the protest against fuel subsidy removal if the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress called off the nationwide strike without the Federal Government reverting fuel price to N65 per litre.
Bakare, at the rally organised by the SNG and coalition of Civil Society Organisations, urged Labour not to compromise its position on the issue.
He said, ‘‘Even if the NLC and the TUC call off the strike, people who have no job, and who do not belong to any union will continue. No retreat no surrender. Nigerian rain will soon fall.’’
He added that no entertainer, media house or protester was paid to be part of the protest but that Nigerians were determined to demand what was just.
He said, ‘‘We did not collect money from anybody when we protested that the President should be made acting President during the Umar Yar’Adua issue.
“This rally is a collective protest by the SNG and its allies. Nobody was paid and it is not a political campaign rally. All musicians, Nollywood actors and other actresses and citizens came on their own to add their voice against oppressive policies.
“They brought their own water, food and other things.’’
Bakare explained that organisers of the rally respected the offices of the President and that the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice and would ensure that there was no violence or resentment during the rally.
He stated that some people were destined to reason while some do not reason at all and others persecute those who reason.
According to him, members of the SNG have been accused of cursing the President during the rallies.
He, however, said no curse would affect somebody who does not deserve it no matter who uttered it.
The cleric said. ‘‘A selfish leader is wicked and there is a curse for the wicked. Selfishness carries its own curse. There is a curse on leaders who ruin their own countries.”
