The left just got crushed

The left just got crushedWhen every legally cast vote has been counted, Joe Biden will probably have prevailed in enough states to claim victory in the presidential race, perhaps even ending up with a few more Electoral Votes than Donald Trump managed to earn four years ago. That means Trump will probably be out, defeated in his bid for re-election.But this is not a moment for Democrats to celebrate. In the expectations game, the Democratic Party whiffed and whiffed badly. The Biden campaign and its allies managed to drive up turnout — but so did Trump. Republicans put up a hell of a fight, and not just, or even mainly, in the battle for the White House. Democrats have almost certainly failed to win a Senate majority, and so far they have lost some ground in the House as well (while still on track to maintain control of the lower chamber of Congress). That means that Biden is on track to be a weak, ineffectual president governing at the mercy of Mitch McConnell's Machiavellian machinations. So much for the Democratic fantasy — the one that seemingly never dies — of unobstructed rule. Democrats didn't just want to win and govern in the name of a deeply divided nation's fractured sense of the common good. No, they wanted to lead a moral revolution, to transform the country — not only enacting a long list of new policies, but making a series of institutional changes that would entrench their power far into the future. Pack the Supreme Court. Add left-leaning states. Break up others to give the left huge margins in the Senate. Get rid of the Electoral College. Abolish the police. Rewrite the nation's history, with white supremacy and racism placed "at the very center." Ensure "equity" not just in opportunity but in outcomes. Hell, maybe they'd even establish a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to teach everyone who voted for or supported the 45th president just how evil they really are.No wonder so many Republicans turned out to vote. Democrats proved to be the most effective GOTV operation for the GOP imaginable.Yes, Trump and the Republican cheerleading section online and on cable news and talk radio harped on every extreme proposal. But this wasn't just a function of the fallacy of composition, where one loony activist says something off the wall and the GOP amplifies it far beyond reason in order to tar the opposition unfairly. These were prominent Democrats — progressive politicians, activists, and scholars and prize-winning journalists at leading cultural institutions — talking this way. Joe Biden himself usually did the smart thing and tried to distance himself from the most radical proposals. But in the end it wasn't enough to mollify fears of an ascendant left hell bent on entrenching itself in power and enacting institutional reforms that would enable it to lead a moral, political, and cultural revolution. And therein lies a paradox that should be obvious but apparently isn't: Democrats live in a country with a large, passionate opposition. Arrogant talk of demographic inevitabilities and transformative changes to lock Republicans out of power in the name of "democracy" has the effect of inspiring that opposition to unite against them, rendering political success less assured and more tenuous. There will be no court packing. No added states. Nothing from the toxic progressive-fantasy wishlist will come anywhere close to passing. Instead, we will have grinding, obstructive gridlock. Some will demand that Biden push through progressive priorities by executive order. But every time he does — like every incident of urban rioting and looting, every effort to placate the left-wing "Squad" in the House, every micro-targeted identity-politics box-checking display of intersectional moral preening and finger-wagging — the country will move closer to witnessing a conservative backlash that results in Republicans taking control of the House and increasing their margin in the Senate in November 2022, rendering the Biden administration even more fully dead in the water. That's the playbook. We saw it in 1994, when Republicans leveraged opposition to Bill Clinton's effort to pass health-care reform into a successful effort to take control of the House for the first time in 40 years. We saw it again in 2010, when Republicans leveraged opposition to Barack Obama's successful push to pass the Affordable Care Act into the largest shift of seats in the House in 62 years (and far bigger than the one Democrats managed two years into the Trump administration in 2018). This time the leverage is likely to come from culture-war conflict, but the Republican strategy will be the same. And that's probably the best-case scenario. It will be far worse if Trump somehow finds enough votes (or sympathetic judges) to enable him to hold onto power by the narrowest of margins, or if he encourages acts of militia-fueled violence in the wake of him failing to find those votes. Those scenarios wouldn't have been possible if the race hadn't ended up as close as it did.But it did. And that should give Democrats serious pause. For four years Donald Trump has proven himself a corrupt, mendacious ignoramus utterly unfit for the position he holds. He's led the nation through a pandemic that has left nearly a quarter million dead, is currently surging unchecked across the country, and has devastated the economy. And yet, the current tally shows him beating his showing from 2016 by 3.7 million votes. Trump may well come up short where it counts, but he still gained ground with the electorate relative to four years ago.So please, Democrats, look in the mirror and show a little humility. You're not nearly as self-evidently wonderful or widely loved as you'd like to believe. You are not destined to prevail anywhere. You share a country with a large group of people who hate your guts, and who aren't going to submit to your rule or go along with your giddy plans to remake the nation in your image. It's time to start acting like you understand this implacable fact and all it implies about the limits of your power and the parameters of the possible.American politics is a war of attrition right now. The sooner Democrats learn to live with that fact, the better.More stories from theweek.com A Biden presidency might essentially be over before it can begin Biden has now received more votes for president than any other candidate in U.S. history Critics shoot down Trump campaign's unfounded victory declaration in Pennsylvania

Flash of luck: Astronomers find cosmic radio burst sourceA flash of luck helped astronomers solve a cosmic mystery: What causes powerful but fleeting radio bursts that zip and zigzag through the universe? Scientists have known about these energetic pulses — called fast radio bursts — for about 13 years and have seen them coming from outside our galaxy, which makes it harder to trace them back to what's causing them. Then this April, a rare but considerably weaker burst coming from inside our own Milky Way galaxy was spotted by two dissimilar telescopes: one a California doctoral student’s set of handmade antenna s, which included actual cake pans, the other a $20 million Canadian observatory.

Portland, Oregon, mayor declares win after tight contest

Portland, Oregon, mayor declares win after tight contestThe mayor of Portland, Oregon, declared victory Wednesday after a bruising campaign that sandwiched him between a tough challenger to his political left and anger from moderate voters and business owners frustrated with five months of near-nightly protests that made the city a frequent lightning rod for President Donald Trump. Mayor Ted Wheeler said he had a clear mandate with more than 90% of the vote counted and was energized by his win. Challenger Sarah Iannarone, who has never held an elected office, said late Tuesday that she was going to bed and urged her supporters to wait until every vote had been counted.

Man 'forced' to inform on fellow Uighurs for China is shot in Turkey

Man 'forced' to inform on fellow Uighurs for China is shot in TurkeyAn Uighur man who claimed to have been forced to inform on fellow Uighurs to Chinese authorities has been hospitalised in a serious condition after being shot in Istanbul, Turkish media reported on Tuesday. Yusufujrang Aimaitijiang had gone outside to get cigarettes when he was shot twice on Monday evening, the private news agency DHA reported. Mr Aimaitijiang suffered injuries to his shoulder and arm while the gunman escaped, the DHA report said. Members of Turkey's Uighur community said Mr Aimaitijiang was also known as Yusupjan Emet and Yusuf Amat. Using the name Amat, he told Al Jazeera in February 2019 that he was forced to inform on fellow Uighurs by China. "My role was to feed information to officials. I reported on everything people did - what they ate, drank, what they did in private in their homes, whether it was friends or relatives, I shared it all," Amat said. He said he started spying in 2012 because his mother was taken hostage, and officials tortured her and threatened to keep her unless he agreed to cooperate. He claimed he had been sent to spy abroad between 2012 and 2018 in countries such as Afghanistan, Pakistan and Turkey, Al Jazeera reported. He added that Beijing has "countless" such informants across the world, some of whom also abduct Uighurs and bring them back to China. There are around 50,000 Uighur refugees in Turkey, which has linguistic and cultural connections with the Uighurs. Many have fled a crackdown on Uighur Muslims in northwest China, where camps and prisons have been used against them in the Xinjiang region. Beijing says they are vocational centres aimed at combating extremism. Trump Croaks His Way Through Downbeat Election Day Call With ‘Fox & Friends’

Trump Croaks His Way Through Downbeat Election Day Call With ‘Fox & Friends’President Donald Trump has spent weeks and months ridiculing Joe Biden for his lack of energy. But, on an Election Day call with Fox & Friends on Tuesday morning, an incredibly downbeat president sounded like he’d just been shaken awake from a thousand-year slumber.Trump appeared on the show as polls opened around the country, and the interview was presumably planned to whip his supporters into a frenzy for the final critical hours of the election campaign. Instead, Trump appeared on the show 45 minutes later than billed without any explanation, and, when he finally spoke, the president was obviously exhausted. The 30-minute call, which was half the length of his usual phone-ins with his favorite morning hosts, was genuinely pretty dispiriting for supporters. Trump sometimes sounded pessimistic about his chances in the election, said that it had been an honor to serve the country, and at one point the hosts actually asked the president if he’d ever cried during his time in office.> Trump's closing message on Fox & Friends is a discussion of Fox? > > "Somebody said 'what's the biggest difference between this and four years ago,' and I say, 'Fox.' It's much different." > > Three Fox & Friends hosts jump in to defend the network. This went on for a few minutes. pic.twitter.com/EbXEknNZKz> > — The Recount (@therecount) November 3, 2020From the very start of the call, Trump sounded like a man who was saying farewell. The president told the hosts: “This has been a very special show for me. From day one, we’ve had a great relationship, and you have a great show, so it’s been my honor.” Host Steve Doocy responded: “We are honored because you selected our show to be the first TV interview you did as president, so it’s great that you would join us today as well.”The implication of Doocy’s reply, that this interview could be one of Trump’s last before election defeat, was left unsaid. The call largely saw the president rely on tired soundbites and talk up the size of his rally crowds during a raging pandemic, but one interesting question was volleyed Trump’s way when he was asked about whether he plans to declare victory before the results are conclusive. Trump promised he wouldn’t do so as there’s “no reason to play games.”But then he launched into a remarkably unconvincing rating of his chances at beating Biden—with or without any dirty tricks.“When there’s victory, if there’s victory, I think we’ll have victory, I think the polls are, you know, suppression polls, and I think we’ll have victory,” said the president. “I think, you know, I look at it as being a very, um, you know, a very solid chance of winning. I don’t know what the chances are, I don’t know how they rate the chances, but I think we have a very solid chance of winning.”But Trump seemed to keep speaking as if it was already a foregone conclusion that Biden would win and become president. At one point, when he was teed up by the hosts to launch a typical attack on the more progressive side of the Democratic party, Trump spoke as if he’d already lost. “Joe’s going to have a hard time, he’s not going to be able to handle them,” he said.Fellow host Brian Kilmeade asked Trump if he felt emotional at his final event on Monday as it could have been “the last rally of your political life.” Trump said he did feel some emotion but said he was totally joking when he said on stage that he felt like crying. “Have you ever cried in your time as president?” the host asked, but the question went unanswered.Trump also laid into Fox News, saying it was no longer as sycophantic as it had been four years ago, which has made his campaign more difficult. He said, “Fox has changed a lot. Somebody said, ‘What’s the biggest difference between this and four years ago?’ I said Fox, it’s much different, you know... Fox is a much different place in terms of politics.”About half an hour into the call, with Trump’s team perhaps realizing that the call wasn’t quite the spirit-raiser needed on Election Day, Doocy said to Trump, “The White House team is telling us you have to go.”Signing off, Trump said in what could be one of his final messages to the hosts as president, “It’s been an honor, and there’s been such love.”Read more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day. Obama says if a Democrat behaved like Trump, 'I couldn't support him'

Obama says if a Democrat behaved like Trump, 'I couldn't support him'Former President Barack Obama told a crowd in Miami on Monday that he puts country over party, and if there was a Democrat behaving "the way our current president does, I couldn't support him."Obama has spent the last several days on the campaign trail for the Democratic presidential nominee, former Vice President Joe Biden, visiting battleground states like Florida and Georgia. In Miami, Obama railed against President Trump, and said that if he "saw a Democrat who was lying every single day — the fact checkers can't keep up, it's like, just over and over again — I would say that's not the example I want, I don't trust that person to manage the country's affairs because it's violating the values that we try to live by. And those are values we try to teach our kids."Since Trump entered office, The Washington Post has been tracking how many false and misleading claims he has made, and in July, he hit 20,000.Obama also brought up the GOP talking point that Biden is a socialist in disguise, an accusation that is being pushed hard in Florida, which has a high Cuban American population. "Here in south Florida you see these ads, 'Joe palling with Communists, palling with socialists,'" Obama said. "You'd think he was having coffee with Castro every morning. Don't fall for that. Joe Biden served as a senator from Delaware, he was my vice president. I think we'd all know if he was a secret socialist by now."More stories from theweek.com COVID-19 keeps proving everyone wrong Is this the year the New South turns blue? Democrats' first priority

Goni en route to Vietnam after deadly strike in Philippines

Goni en route to Vietnam after deadly strike in PhilippinesGoni slammed into the eastern Philippines on Saturday night, local time as a super typhoon with maximum sustained winds equivalent to a strong Category 4 hurricane in the Atlantic and East Pacific basins. At 4:50 a.m., local time, Super Typhoon Goni made its first landfall near Bato, Catanduanes, according to Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA). At least 20 deaths have been blamed on the torrential rainfall, dangerous winds and devastating storm surge from Goni, most occurring in the province of Albay, according to Reuters. Super Typhoon Goni lurks to the east of the Philippines Saturday afternoon, Oct. 31, 2020, local time. A well-defined eye can be seen on satellite. (AccuWeather) After desolating parts of the Philippines over the weekend, Tropical Storm Goni emerged over the South China Sea on Monday. A continued track to the west will bring the storm to Vietnam by Wednesday night and Thursday. CLICK HERE FOR THE FREE ACCUWEATHER APP Goni is forecast to remain a tropical storm as it tracks across the South China Sea through the middle of the week. While some strengthening is possible for this system as it will be located in an area of light wind shear, the waters have been disrupted by several tropical systems in recent weeks, which brought cooler water to the surface. This will limit how much intensity Goni is able to regain. The storm is expected to bring another round of tropical downpours and gusty winds to central and southern Vietnam from later on Wednesday into Thursday, local time. This region has been the target of most of the tropical systems that disturbed the South China Sea. Widespread rainfall of 50-100 mm (2-4 inches) is expected to encompass central and southeastern Vietnam during this time. Along Goni's track, a more concentrated area of 100-200 mm (4-8 inches) of rain is expected, with an AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 350 mm (14 inches) expected. With much of eastern Vietnam already recovering from recent heavy rainfall from tropical storms, rainfall from Goni is expected to slow recovery and potentially lead to new flooding and mudslides. While Goni is expected to be a tropical storm at landfall, widespread wind damage is not expected to be a significant concern. Wind gusts of 65-95 km/h (40-60 mph) are expected to cause minor structural damage and power outages along the track of the storm across central Vietnam. An AccuWeather Local StormMax™ wind gust of 130 km/h (80 mph) is possible. Due to its expected impacts in Vietnam, Goni is a 1 on the AccuWeather RealImpact™ Scale for Tropical Cyclones. The AccuWeather RealImpact™ Scale is a 6-point scale with ratings of less than one and 1 to 5. In contrast to the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, which classifies storms by wind speed only, the AccuWeather RealImpact™ Scale is based on a broad range of important factors, including wind speed, flooding rain, storm surge and economic damage and loss. Once inland, Goni is expected to quickly lose wind intensity and become a tropical rainstorm across southern Laos. Locally heavy rain can spread into southern Laos and eastern Cambodia during the end of the week, though the threat for flooding is expected to diminish in these areas. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Atsani, also known as Siony in the Philippines, is spinning across the Philippine Sea. After stalling over the Philippine Sea through the beginning of the week, Atsani may take a path toward the northern Philippines during the second half of the week. Keep checking back on AccuWeather.com and stay tuned to the AccuWeather Network on DirecTV, Frontier and Verizon Fios.

America braces for election violence with shops boarded up and National Guard on standby

America braces for election violence with shops boarded up and National Guard on standbyCities across the United States were battening down the hatches as they prepared for potential riots in the wake of the election on Tuesday. With the country more bitterly divided than at any time since the Vietnam War in the 1970s it was feared a disputed result could set off nationwide clashes. In Washington businesses near the White House, including hotels, banks and restaurants, boarded up their windows, as did those in iconic New York locations including Times Square and Fifth Avenue. Alex Provenzano, who owns a nail salon two blocks from the White House, said it was "pretty scary," adding: "I hope for the best, but the people are very stressed out." Officials were removing bins and bicycle stands so they couldn't be used as projectiles. Students at George Washington University in the capital were told to hunker down. An email sent to students by the university said: "We suggest preparing for the Election Day period as you would for a hurricane or a snowstorm that would prevent you from going outside for several days to grab food or order takeout."

Russian passport is for son's sake: Snowden

Russian passport is for son's sake: Snowden

Edward Snowden, the American whistleblower who fled the country after his massive leak of classified intelligence files in 2013, says he's applying for Russian citizenship now to avoid separation from his son.

Snowden's wife Lindsay is pregnant and expecting to give birth next month, according to local media. The two want Russian passports.

Writing on Twitter, Snowden cited border closures and ongoing public safety concerns as influencing his decision.

He added "Lindsay and I will remain Americans, raising our son with all the values of the America we love — including the freedom to speak his mind."

Seven years ago, Snowden was working as a contractor for the U.S. National Security Agency, when he revealed files showing vast domestic and international surveillance operations.

Ever since U.S. authorities have wanted him returned to face a criminal trial on espionage charges.

Russia has already granted Snowden permanent residency rights and back in August U.S. President Donald Trump said he was considering a pardon for him.

U.S. Supreme Court hands narrow win to Black Lives Matter activist over protest incident

U.S. Supreme Court hands narrow win to Black Lives Matter activist over protest incidentThe U.S. Supreme Court on Monday sided with Black Lives Matter activist DeRay McKesson in his ongoing effort to avoid a lawsuit filed by a police officer injured during a 2016 protest in Louisiana triggered by the police killing of a Black man. The justices threw out a lower court ruling that had allowed the lawsuit to proceed and said that more analysis was needed on whether Louisiana state law allows for such a claim. McKesson has argued that the rights of freedom of speech and assembly under the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment should shield him from the lawsuit that accused him of negligence for leading the protest in Baton Rouge, but the court did not resolve that issue.
