Disney fires Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn after old paedophilia jokes found on Twitter

Disney fires Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn after old paedophilia jokes found on TwitterThe Hollywood director behind the blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy films has been fired by Disney after it emerged he joked about paedophilia and rape on Twitter. James Gunn apologised for the tweets, posted between 2008 and 2011, saying he had "developed as a person". In one of the now deleted tweets he wrote: "The best thing about being raped is when you’re done being raped and it’s like ‘whew this feels great, not being raped!'" In another, he wrote: "I like when little boys touch me in my silly place." He also joked about subjects including the Holocaust, Aids, and the September 11, 2001, terror attacks. 1. Many people who have followed my career know when I started, I viewed myself as a provocateur, making movies and telling jokes that were outrageous and taboo. As I have discussed publicly many times, as I’ve developed as a person, so has my work and my humor.— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) July 20, 2018 Alan Horn, chairman of Walt Disney Studios, said: "The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him." Gunn, 51, will not be directing the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. He wrote and directed the first two installments, which made more than $1.6 billion (£1.2 billion) at the box office. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 premiere: in pictures Gunn was also executive producer of Avengers: Infinity War. He has been a vocal critic of President Donald Trump, and his old tweets were discovered by political opponents. After they emerged Gunn wrote on Twitter that he had begun his career as a "provocateur, making movies and telling jokes that were outrageous and taboo". He added: "I’ve developed as a person, so has my work and my humour. I am very, very different than I was a few years ago. "Today I try to root my work in love and connection and less in anger.  My days saying something just because it’s shocking and trying to get a reaction are over. "In the past, I have apologised for humour of mine that hurt people. I truly felt sorry and meant every word of my apologies. For the record, when I made these shocking jokes, I wasn’t living them out."

In Gaza and Israel, war fears mount despite truceAfter seven chaotic and violent hours, quiet returned to the Gaza Strip overnight. The fatal shooting by a Palestinian of an Israeli soldier during protests along the border Friday sparked a widespread wave of Israeli bombing, with three fighters from Gaza's Islamist rulers Hamas killed and dozens of targets struck. After intensive indirect mediation by the United Nations and Egypt, a truce came into force at midnight, yet both populations remained on high alert of another all-out conflict between Israel and Hamas.

WhatsApp to limit forwarding of messages by 200 million Indian users in effort to halt violent lynchings

WhatsApp to limit forwarding of messages by 200 million Indian users in effort to halt violent lynchingsWhatsApp announced limits on Friday on the forwarding of messages by its 200 million Indian users in an effort to stop a spate of horrific lynchings and to assuage government threats of legal action in its biggest market. More than 20 people have been butchered by crazed mobs in the past two months across India after being accused of child kidnapping and other crimes in viral messages circulated wildly on WhatsApp. Late on Thursday India's government, scrambling to find a response, threatened to take WhatsApp to court, saying the "medium" for spreading malicious rumours "cannot evade responsibility and accountability". "If (WhatsApp) remain mute spectators they are liable to be treated as abettors and thereafter face consequent legal action," the information technology ministry said. The Facebook-owned firm responded on Friday with an announcement it will test limiting the ability to forward messages and cap at five the number of contacts or groups that messages can be forwarded to. Indian WhatsApp lynchings | A timeline It addition, it said it will remove the "quick forward button" next to media messages, making sending on messages more cumbersome. "We believe that these changes - which we'll continue to evaluate - will help keep WhatsApp the way it was designed to be: a private messaging app," a statement said. Worldwide, the company will limit the number of forwards to 20 other groups, a spokesman said. Lynchings are nothing new in India, but the spread of smartphones - there are a billion plus handsets, and data is cheap - to even the most remote corners has enabled rumours to be shared at lightning speed. In India people forward on WhatsApp more messages, photos, and videos, than any other country in the world, the company says.
