Teenage housewife poison eight-day-old baby's

A 17-year-old housewife, Godiya, on Wednesday told the police in Kaduna that she killed the baby of her husband's mistress by giving him poisonous substance locally known as Ota pia pia.

Godiya, who is currently in police custody, said she went to her husband's mistress' house for the eight-day-old baby's naming ceremony and used a syringe to inject some quantity of the poisonous substance into the baby's mouth when she was left alone with him in a room.

She explained that she got wind that the mistress, Happiness, who resides in Saman Fili Quarters of Kasuwa Magani town, a suburb of the Kaduna metropolis, was impregnated by her husband, Caleb David.
Following the baby boy's birth, Godiya, who is also nursing a one-year-old baby, said she went to Happiness' house on December 21 last year to felicitate with her.
She added that on her way, she bought some soaps as gift for the baby's mother and the poisonous substance, which she wanted to use to get rid of beans weevils in her home.
Godiya said, at her husband's mistress' house, Happiness left the baby in her care and went to bathe.
She said, “She came back from the bathroom and applied body cream after which she went into the kitchen. I wanted to go back home for a meeting. So, I put a small quantity of the poisonous substance in the baby's mouth following which he started crying.
“The mother rushed back to breastfeed him but he refused; he was also given palm oil. He was later taken to a hospital where he died. It was a mistake and I'm very sorry because when I was going to her house, I did have the intention of killing the baby. I bought the poison to preserve my beans against weevils.”
Godiya, however, accused her husband of allegedly maltreating her because of his mistress. She said she feared that her husband might end up marrying Happiness.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Aminu Lawan, said Godiya remained the prime suspect because she was the only person left with the baby before his sudden death.
He said, “When the mother of the baby noticed that the baby was crying, she applied all methods to make him stop crying to no avail, until the people around perceived the odour of the poisonous substance. As a result, they suspected a foul play.
“They then reported the matter to the police. We trailed Godiya to her house and after interrogation she confessed that she gave the baby the poisonous substance that she bought from the market.”
Lawan said further investigations were still ongoing, adding that as soon as police concluded their investigation, the suspect would be charged to court
