President Jonathan on Tuesday evening announced as gifts from the Federal Government to each Super Eagles player, 5 million Naira, a national award of Member of the Order of Niger, MON, and a plot of land in Abuja, for their victory in the just concluded 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.
The president made the announcement at a special reception held in honour of the Super Eagles at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Speaking at the event, the president said two sets of Nigerian youths – musicians and footballers, had been placing the nation on the world map.
He commended them for ignoring criticisms and refusing to surrender by their superlative performance.
“The lesson in your victory for all of us is that we should never give up in the midst of criticism. Believe in yourself. With time, you will see the fruits of your labour,” he said.

“On the football field nobody cares who scores for Nigeria. You can be a Musa or a Moses…all we care is for the green flag to fly”

Asst Coach Ike Shorumu – Officer of the Order of Niger, N5million, plot of land in Abuja
Captain Joseph Yobo – Officer of the Order of Niger, N5million, plot of land in Abuja
Super Eagles players – Member of the Order of Niger, N5million, plot of land in Abuja
Technical crew – N2 million
Asst Coach Daniel Amokachi – Officer of the Order of Niger, N5million, Plot of land in Abuja

Billionaire businessmen Tony Elumelu and Jim Ovia donated half a million dollars each to the Super Eagles, while Dangote donated N5m to each player and technical crew of the Super Eagles.
The event was attended by the wife of the President, Patience; Vice President Namadi Sambo; President of the Senate, David Mark; Speaker, House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwwal; Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu; Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihediora, and state governors among others.
