Soldiers beat bus driver to death in Benin

Some Soldiers in Benin have allegedly beaten a commercial bus driver to death over a minor auto accident involving an army lieutenant and the driver, in the state capital.


This sad incident yesterday occurred barely three days after a commercial bus driver was beaten to death by a faction of the state Drivers Welfare Scheme in Benin City.


It was gathered that the victim, Isaac Onaiwu, 48; father of three children had an auto accident inside the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Ugbowo campus with the army lieutenant who allegedly forced him to S&T Army Barracks Uselu-Benin where he was beaten to a state of coma.


The victim whose corpse was seen in the emergency ward of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) yesterday, was said to have been brought in by some soldiers from S&T Army Barrack Benin City.


The wife of the late Bus driver, Mrs. Floernce Onaiwu disclosed that the Lieutenant called her on phoneabout 10pm on Tuesday informing her to go and take care of her husband in UBTH.


She added that on arriving the hospital she met some soldiers and policemen standing beside her husband who was in coma on the bed as they left immediately.


The elder brother of the victim, Mr. Mathew Onaiwu stated that he was told at the S&T Army Barrack by the Lieutenant that the victim was taken to the barracks so that the owner of the bus would surface for repairs as he was not beaten as alleged.


The co-ordinator General, Save Accident Victims of Nigeria (SAVAN), UBTH, Dr. Eddy Ehikhamenor who condemned the action of the soldiers, disclosed that the victim was brought to the hospital in coma as efforts by doctors to revive him failed.


Contacted the Administration officer, S&T captain Uche declined comment.


Meanwhile, the two vehicles have been taken into Ugbowo police station Benin City under custody.
