Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift Spoke on the Phone to Resolve MTV VMAs Twitter Spat

Team Minaj and Swifties can rest their fingers on Twitter because their two favorite singers, Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift, respectively, have worked it out.

Minaj confirmed today on “Good Morning America” that the two music superstars spoke on the phone yesterday and are “all good” after their Twitter spat following Tuesday's announcement of the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards nominations.

“We spoke for a long time. We were cracking up laughing on the phone. It’s over you guys,” Minaj said on “GMA.” Minaj sparked the firestorm by taking to social media Tuesday to express her frustration that her song “Anaconda” was not nominated for some of the show’s top awards. "Anaconda" was nominated for Best Female Video and Best Hip-Hop Video but not Video of the Year.

If I was a different "kind" of artist, Anaconda would be nominated for best choreo and vid of the year as well.

“I posted something on my Instagram and it just showed the stats of other videos that had been nominated previously and there just seemed to be a little funny business going on,” Minaj explained today.

“‘Anaconda’ had such a huge cultural impact and, on top of that, we broke the Vemo record...," she said. "I do think if it was one of the pop girls, there would have many nominations for it."

Minaj expressed a similar sentiment in a tweet Tuesday, writing, “If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year.”

The “Night Is Still Young” singer explained today on “GMA” that she was just referring to the diversity she wants to see in music.

“I think that we just have to have both images for girls,” she said. “We can’t have only one type of body being glorified in the media because it just makes girls even more insecure than we already are.”

Minaj's tweet, however, was not interpreted that way at first by Swift, whose “Bad Blood” video famously features her gaggle of supermodel friends and was nominated for Video of the Year.
Swift replied directly to Minaj’s tweet, writing, “@NICKIMINAJ I’ve done nothing but love & support you. It’s unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot..”

By Thursday, after multiple tweets back and forth between the two singers, Swift had apologized to Minaj on Twitter, saying she “misspoke,” a sentiment Minaj says she echoed in their phone conversation.

I thought I was being called out. I missed the point, I misunderstood, then misspoke. I'm sorry, Nicki. @NICKIMINAJ

“She was, you know, super, super sweet and she apologized,” Minaj said of the “Bad Blood” singer. “She said, ‘You know, look I didn’t understand the big picture of what you were saying but now I get it.’”

Minaj says the proverbial “bad blood” between the two singers does not mean they can’t work together in the future.

“I’m sure we can,” Minaj said. “You know why, because it takes a big person to do what Taylor did.”

“Everyone sometimes speaks out of turn, you know, I’ve been there,” she added. “Sometimes we do things and we don’t think right away or we don’t investigate and we just talk so it was big of her to come out and say that."
