Youth arm of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party has lampooned President Goodluck Jonathan for denying sponsorship of the posters announcing his 2015 second term ambition, which flooded the streets of Abuja on Tuesday.
The group called on Jonathan to resign if he lacks the ideas of how to rule the nation, noting that since he assumed office, he had not achieved anything meaningful especially in the area of security and employment.
The youth, who voiced their conviction via an e-mail on Thursday, affirmed that it was high time they saved PDP from Jonathan.
The statement entitled: “What will Jonathan gain by digging the grave of our great party, the PDP?’ and ‘Resign if you have run out of luck and ideas’ was personally signed by its Publicity Director, Comrade Bala Usman, and its National Director, Mr. Fidelis Uzoka.
It said, “The event of the last few days has ignited outrage and public condemnation because of the deliberate and well-calculated commencement of a presidential campaign by President Jonathan even in the face of his so-called ban on political activities.
“This is an unwarranted test of the will and patience of Nigerians, who tried to exhibit high level of tolerance of an administration which seems in the last two years to have lost the focus of true leadership and proper understanding of the ideals of our party’s founding fathers.”
However, the group noted that though every member of the party has the right to seek re-election, the display of the President’s posters was capable of dividing the party.
It said: “Mr. President has not shown the will and competence to solve the many problems of our country for which Nigerians entrusted him with their mandate.”
They also noted that with Jonathan’s level of performance, it was obvious that the acclaimed largest party in Africa might not return to power in 2015.
While appealing to His Excellency to honour his alleged agreement with party leaders and Governors in 2011 not to seek re-election, the group said there was no gain saying that he doesn’t know anything about the posters.
It would be recalled that Jonathan’s 2015 posters were seen in several places including the Peoples Democratic Party headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.
Even though Jonathan had dissociated himself from the campaign, opposition political parties and groups have continued to fault the President’s claim
Meanwhile, the National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh, however, said the group does not exist.
He said, “Let me make it clear that my response is a mockery of a childish attempt by a faceless, inexperienced and impotent persons using a non-existing name or body.”
