Nigeria lost another icon yesterday, with the death on eminent jurist and retired justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Kayode Eso. Justice Eso death came a few days after former Governor of Oyo State, Chief lam Adesina and ex-Senate Leader and strongman of Kwara politics, Chief Olusola Saraki, died. Confirming his father’s death from London, Justice Eso’s son, Olumide Eso, said the retired justice died at Hammersmith Hospital, London, United Kingdom.
He simply said: “With Glory to Almighty God we wish to announce the peaceful passing on of our husband, father, grandfather, and brother Justice Kayode Eso on Friday, 16 November 2012 at Hammersmith Hospital London United Kingdom. “He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Helen Aina Eso, his children, Funmilayo Eso Williams and Olumide Eso, as well as his grandchildren.” Until his death, Justice Eso spent more of his time in the United Kingdom.
The last time he came to Nigeria was in September when he returned to receive the national honours of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR). He had earlier received the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) in 1979. Justice Eso was born on September 18, 1925 at Ilesa, in Osun State. He attended Ilesa Grammar School, where he was on top of his class always.
He also attended Trinity College, Dublin, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Law with Hons degree in Legal Science in 1953 and a Master’s degree in 1956. The late justice had written many books. He was married to Helen Aina Eso. Commenting on Justice Eso’s death, National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic party (PDP), Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, said it was a personal loss. According to the former Osun State governor, “it is also a great loss to Osun State and to Nigeria.
