FUTA SUG President, Other Union Leaders Die In Autocrash

The presidents of three student unions in Ondo State (South-West Nigeria) have been reported dead in an autocrash on Owo-Akure Road.

They are the presidents of the student unions of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (Dapo Awopegba); Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo (Abiodun Akintola); and Ondo State School of Midwifery, Oyinkansola Olootu.


They died on their way back to their institutions from Abuja, where they had gone to witness the presentation of an award to the state governor, Olusegun Mimiko, and some other eminent Nigerians by the National Association of Nigerian Students.

According to the spokesman for the state police command, Aremu Adeniran, they died in a lone accident at Emure Ile junction on the expressway on Friday night around 8p.m. He added that the accident was as a result of over speeding.

The students perished when their car got involved in an accident at Emure Ile junction in Ondo State.

Their corpses have been deposited in a morgue while those who sustained injuries are receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Center in Owo.

Students of the Federal University of Technology in Akure today shut down major highways in the state to protest the death of their colleagues. Governor Mimiko made a late-night visit to the campus to calm down the restive students.
