Central Hospital collapses in Benin City

A section of the multi-billion naira ultramodern Central Hospital buildings in Benin City, Edo State, where construction work is ongoing, collapsed on Monday evening, injuring about five persons.

Five of the injured persons were immediately rushed to the emergency unit of the hospital, just as two out of the three persons that were trapped in the rubble were eventually rescued through the combined efforts of some of the workers and the assistance of other construction companies.

The two persons who were rescued were also taken to hospital for medical attention, as process of rescuing the third person, an expatriate worker, was still ongoing at the time of filing this report.

The collapsed portion was a section of the third floor of a three-storey wing of the buildings.

The Edo State Commissioner for Information, Mr Louis Odion, said what they found was that a crane fell on a beam that was constructed on Monday.

Odion said the government was relieved because there was no casualty, adding that the structure was still standing.
