The bomaber, now in critical condition at the Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, and closely monitored by security agents travelled in a commercial bus to Bauchi, concealing the bomb in his backpack.
Luck ran out on the bomber when he carelessly dropped the bag on the floor to urinate in a corner.
The device subsequently detonated, dismembering his lower limb and an fingers.
Shortly after the incident, while conscious and in pains, the bomber told onlookers - including police officers who had come to arrest him - that he was part of a larger cell of the terrorist Boko Haram sect who are infiltrating the city to carry out an assignment in “God’s name.”
He said his colleagues were on their way to the city from other towns.
When thoroughly searched, a gun was found on him, which the police reportedly took away.
The Boko Haram sect recently began its latest wave of attacks on churches, government buildings and security agents.
On Sunday, three churches were bombed in Kaduna state while services were on, killing 21 worshippers. It sparked reprisals that killed 29 Muslims. Counter reprisals have killed at least five.
The group also engaged government security forces in a brazen overnight battle in Damaturu, the Yobe state capital, killing up to 21 persons.
The group, which began its violent activities after first calling for the eradication of western education and islamization of Nigeria’s northern states, took up arms against the state in 2009 after the police extra-judicially murdered its leader and more than 700 members.
Since then, over 1500 Nigerians have been murdered in various attacks masterminded by the group.
President Goodluck Jonathan, now away in Brazil, had in March this year promised to put a stop to the activities latest by June. The month is almost gone and rather than being checked, the sect stepped up its attacks.
Residents of Bauchi town who spoke to P M said the people are apprehensive of a looming attack, following the unfortunate bomber’s confessions.
Police in the state said they are watching the bomber closely hoping that he would survive to help investigations.
