Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Friday morning

Good morning! Here are 10 things you need to know this morning:

1. Despite the emergence of new Senate leader, his Deputy and other leadership positions on Thursday in line with the wish of the Saraki group, the APC in a statement issued by the party’s National Secretary, Mala Buni, the party said the lists it sent to the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives must be honoured.

2. President Muhammadu Buhari had on Thursday in a statement issued through Mr Haruna Imrana, the Director Communications, Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF) approved the appointment of Alhaji Ahmed Idris as the new Accountant General of the Federation (AGF).

3. There was an attempt by some members of the House of Reps on Thursday to snatch away the mace after fight broke out among members. Fight started after the Speaker of the House moved to announce principal officers of the House.

4. Following the leadership crisis that broke out at the House of Representatives on Thursday, the Speaker of the House, Hon. Yakubu Dogara abruptly adjourned plenary till July 21, 2015.

5. Senate President, Bukola Saraki on Thursday defiled the order of the All progressives Congress, APC, regarding the remaining leadership positions in the Senate. Contrary to the party’s suggestion, Saraki announced Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume from Borno State as Senate Majority Leader, Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah from Kebbi central as Deputy Majority leader. Francis Alimikhena was equally confirmed as Deputy Chief Whip.

6. The opposition Peoples Democratic party has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of complexity in the ongoing National Assembly crisis, saying that the President and his party have shown lack of commitment by attempting to control activities of the lawmakers. This was contained in a statement signed by PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh.

7. Despite the statement issued by the presidency denying the removal of DSS from the villa, report has it that authorities of the Presidential Villa, Abuja have formally removed officials who are close to the president from their posts.

8. Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike Thursday restored all the entitlements and benefits of Sir Celestine Omehia as a former Governor of the state. He also reinstated his portrait at the government House as a former governor, saying the era of politics of bitterness was over. He said Omehia had ruled the state at some points, hence deserved all benefits accrued to the position.

9. President Muhammadu Buhari will be meeting with Barack Obama at the White House on July 20 to discuss how to fight the Boko Haram militant group and other issues. This was officially announced by the White House on Thursday.

10. Report says a Sharia court in Kano on Thursday sentenced to death, eight persons, including a woman for making blasphemous statement against Prophet Mohammed.
