Celebrities React to Gay Marriage Vote in Ireland

Celebrities are thrilled Ireland “voted yes” to become the first country to legalize gay marriage by popular vote. Millions of people in Ireland showed up to vote on Friday in the historic election. It was announced on Saturday that more than 60 percent of the people who voted were in support of the referendum. Shortly after, “Ireland” and the hashtag “#LoveWins” started to trend on Twitter, with many celebrities praising the election result.
Sam Smith, wrote, “So happy Ireland have passed the law to get married there. Still genuinely shocks me thou, that this is only just happening!” The singer added, “Such a long way to go. But we can’t give up until we are equal.” “Glee” star Matthew Morrison, tweeted, “#LoveWins Happy for the people of Ireland!” Meanwhile, Ellen Page, who came out as gay last year, simply wrote, “IRELAND!!!!!!”

Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who admitted he was “staunchly against leaving civil rights up to a popular vote,” was still nevertheless proud of the outcome: “I’m thrilled the populous of Ireland seems to embrace #MarriageEquality!” And Thomas Sadoski, star of “The Newsroom” tweeted, “The numbers are overwhelming. Beautifully overwhelming. Congrats Ireland! #LoveWins.”

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling also showed her support, writing, “@cassie10yson I don’t have the right to be proud, as I’m not Irish. I’m in awe, that’s what I am – Ireland has set an example to to the world!” Hozier tweeted, “The pure joy of it. I’m so proud of Ireland today… We can all take pride in making history. Only sorry I can’t be there to celebrate!” And Thandie Newton offered, “Ireland showing the world what’s possible. Stunning.”

Lance Bass tweeted, “Congrats #Ireland on legalizing love!” while Matt Bomer expressed, “So happy and proud of my Irish heritage today. What an incredible victory! #IrelandVoteYes.” Along with the hashtag #LoveWins, Russell Simmons wrote, “congratulations to the people of Ireland.” And an ecstatic Sarah Silverman gushed on Twitter, “Republic of IRELAND leads the world in social progress by legalizing marriage for all. #LoveWins (shouldn’t it always?)”
