Protesters burn commissioner’s house, LG boss’, legislator’s


Some youth in Langtang South Local Government Area of Plateau State on Tuesday burnt down the houses of a commissioner, a legislator and the council chairman.

The victims include Bako Famak, Commissioner for Youths Development; Joyce Ramnap, the lawmaker; and Nanman Darko, the chairman.

A witness said, in Langtang on Tuesday, that the mob took advantage of the strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress in solidarity with teachers and other local government workers.

The local government workers including primary school teachers have been at home for eight months to protest the non-implementation of the N18, 000 minimum wage.

 Muslim man was jailed for life today for stabbing his devout Christian ex-girlfriend 13 times after they split following bitter rows about him wanting their young daughter to convert to Islam.

Esther Arogundade, 32, was attacked by kitchen porter Shola Adebiyi in her own home after she began a relationship with another man.

Adebiyi also drank oven cleaner in an attempt to kill himself and phoned Esther's new lover to say he would never see her again before confessing to the killing to a friend.

Gay couple jailed for 14 years


Thrown into jail for 14 years under Malawi’s anti-gay laws, Tiwonge Chimbalanga has no regrets about the marriage ceremony that became a symbol of Africa’s intolerance toward homosexuality.

In the first press interview since being granted asylum in South Africa, the 24-year-old, who was freed amid global pressure, urged more Malawians to come out from the shadows as the country’s ban on same-sex relationships eases.

“I don’t have any regrets, I didn’t do anything wrong,” Chimbalanga, who identifies as a transgender woman despite being tried as a gay man, told AFP.

Enebeli Elebuwa’s friend claims veteran actor may have committed suicide


Days after the sad news of the demise of Nollywood actor Enebeli Elebuwa in an Indian Hospital was received, a source which claims to be a close friend of the deceased has said he committed suicide.

The source believes his friend committed suicide after suffering stroke for months and losing all hope in living.

The source said, after they learnt of the death of fellow actor Pete Eneh, the actor contacted his friend and spoke the following words to him:

“ACN is more corrupt than us” – PDP insists


The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has replied major opposition party, Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) over its recent statement that the ruling party is habouring corruption in the country, saying that it is certain that the presidency will win its battle over corruption with the combined efforts of all Nigerians.
A statement issued on Tuesday by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Olisa Metuh, affirmed the opposition party is more corrupt than the ruling party.

It said: “No government in the history of Nigeria has attempted the bold initiatives that our party has taken to fight corruption. The PDP led Federal Government created the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as well as the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC).

Prostitutes and male clients arraigned in Lagos Court

Five prostitutes, alongside four of their male patronisers were recently arrested by the Police in Lagos state.

Following their arrest, the nine accused persons were arrainged before an Ojokoro Magistrate Court on a four-count charge of prostitution, unlawful gathering, breach of peace and loitering.

However when the charges were read to the defendants, Emeka Chukwuma, 28; Paul Okon, 26; Fabian Sunday, 26; Shedrach John, 30 and Angel David, 27, Destiny Moses, 30; Chinyere Mbadiwe, 27; Gift Okon, 29, and Edith David, 27, they all pleaded not guilty to the four-count charge.

While many families are worrying about how to afford Christmas this year, one jobless single mother has revealed she receives so much in benefits she has £2,000 to spend on designer gifts, clothes and partying.

Mother-of-two Leanna Broderick plans to buy 20 presents for each of her children, including Burberry and Ralph Lauren outfits, iPads and gold jewellery.

The 20-year-old, who has never worked, claims nearly £15,500 a year in state handouts.

Major opposition party, the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has said the recent rating by Transparency International in its 2012 Corruption Perception Index (CPI) portrays that President Jonathan lied about his claims on the state of corruption in the nation.

Okonjo-Iweala’s mom: Police dismiss $1bn ransom phone call


The police in Delta State have dismissed reports that abductors of Kanene Okonjo, mother of Nigeria’s Finance Minister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, are demanding $1bn as ransom.

The state Police Commissioner, Ikechukwu Aduba, on Monday said the police were not aware of the speculated demands.

Reuters reports that Police said someone, purporting to be one of the kidnappers, had phoned on Monday to make some demands, but it was impossible to say whether the call was genuine.

Baby dumped in bush by mother dies


The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended a 37-year-old woman for allegedly dumping her one-day-old baby girl in a bush, causing her death.

According to the police authorities, the woman, Aderoju Ojelabi, placed her baby in a sack along with her placenta and dumped her in a bush not too far from her home on November 25, 2012.

Ojelabi told PUNCH Metro that she dumped the baby because of the financial burden of raising her, adding that she was still nursing an 18-month-old baby when she gave birth to the baby.

She said, “I’ve been married four times and I have five children. My last husband died last year and presently I’m nursing an 18-month-old baby boy. When I couldn’t fend for myself anymore, I started dating someone and the man was taking care of me.

ECOWAS officials unhappy with Obasanjo, may bar him from heading missions


Mr. Obasanjo was head of ECOWAS Observer Mission to Ghana.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo may be a brash and outspoken person, but his utterances seem to have embarrassed international officials who have now vowed to take action.

Mr. Obasanjo, Head of the ECOWAS Observer Mission for the Ghanaian elections, had on Saturday, defended his recommendation of curtailing the “excesses of the (Ghanaian) media” in election coverage.

The former President was furious that media houses were announcing, live, approved results from polling units contrary to what obtains in Nigeria where election results are announced only at the headquarters of the electoral body.

Onolomemen says, N500 bn needed annually to fix Nigerian roads


The bad roads in Nigeria might not be fixed anytime soon , as the Minister of Works says the budget for the fixing the roads is inadequate.

The average budget of N100 billion is rather insufficient and grossly inadequate to repair the Nation’s deplorable roads, with over N500 billion required annually in the next four years to fix the roads, the Minister of Works, Mike Onolomemen, said in Abuja on Monday.

Mr. Onolomemen said this at a public hearing on measures to address the near collapse of roads across the country, and a bill to provide for the maintenance of public infrastructure.

One of the children of theOkonjo family, Mr OnyemaOkonjo, on Monday said his mother’s kidnap “Is really a sad reflection of where we are as a society.”

He also blamed the kidnap of his mother, Prof. Kanenne Okonjo on security lapses.

Kanenne (82), is the mother of the Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

Couple arrested for dumping day-old baby inside bush

The police in Ekiti State have arrested a couple, Mr. Dada Ojo and his wife, Adejoke, for allegedly dumping their newborn baby inside a bush.

Our correspondent learnt on Sunday that the woman and her husband were arrested on Friday.

A source in the community said the cry of the baby in the bush attracted residents of the area, who alerted officials of Ikere Local Government Area.

It was learnt that Adejoke, 26, gave birth to the baby at home last Wednesday without anybody’s assistance because she could neither afford hospital bills nor patronise the local birth attendants.

Journalist beaten to coma at Governor Akpabio’s birthday bash


The Uyo correspondent of The Nation newspaper has been beaten to coma by security operatives attached to Akwa Ibom State Governor, Godswill Akpabio, as he made to enter the venue of a lavish party the governor is hosting in celebration of his 50th birthday.

Five operatives of the State Security Service descended on Kazeem Ibrahym at the entrance of the Governor’s lodge in Uyo.

Mr. Ibrahim and his colleagues were invited by the governor’s media office to cover the event, and it is not clear why the reporter was singled out for harassment.
