Dana crash: “We will fully compensate victims’ families soon” – Usidamen


Dana Group, owners of Dana Airlines have assured the 40 families of the victims of the ill-fated Dana plane crash that they will give out statutory compensation to those properly entitled at the earliest opportunity .

Dana Group’s Head of Corporate Communications, Mr. Tony Usidamen, in a statement entitled “Dana Air Press Statement on Payment of Insurance Benefits to Families” said they should be patient.
The statement reads in part: “The present position is that 80 advance payments of US$30,000 have been processed by virtue of documentation supplied demonstrating familial links and kinship; our insurers are continuing to deal with all other claims in accordance with the applicable law.”
Usidamen while refuting the report that Dana Air and its insurers have refused to pay statutory compensation to families of victims of the crash explained that before the payment, it is necessary for claimants to produce the required Grants of Probate or Letters of Administration.

Two federal hospitals accused of lawyer’s death


The family members of a 37-year-old lawyer, Alex Ofehe, who died at the Federal Staff Hospital in Jabi, Abuja after an unsuccessful operation has accused the two federal hospitals of gross negligence that led to the sudden demise of the lawyer.

Late Alex had complications few days after the surgeries, as he suffered severe pains and a bulging stomach to the extent that he started passing blood as urine and stool.

He was taken back into the theatre to clean the wounds of previous surgeries, however, his family members alleged that the hospital repeated the same surgical procedures on his intestines in “suspicious” circumstances.

There is a special arrangement of the UAE national flag in a villa on Algeria Street, Mirdiff.

It is not merely special because of the size of it, making it visible to planes landing and taking off from the Dubai International Airport.

What is special about the 25-metre long flag is that it is made by a senior Emirati couple - who are both fighting for their lives against cancer with the help of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

Catherine. 30, has been taken to King Edward VII Hospital in London with acute morning sickness is expected to stay in hospital for several days.

In a statement on the couple's website, the couple said they were 'delighted with the news'.

The Queen, Prince Philip and other members of the royal family are ‘delighted’.

Anglican Bishop Blasted For Promoting Lesbianism


A Bishop with a leading church has been caught up in a fix as he is being accused of promoting homoséxuality at a mission boarding school.

The issue came to light after the bishop (name withheld for legal reasons), overturned the board's decisions to expel a couple that had been caught red handed practicing lesbianism.

A source who spoke to news crew last week alleged that the Bishop overturned the decision in a bid to save one of the students who is reported to be a child of an Anglican employee (name withheld).

Father told me about love child – Ojukwu’s son


First son of late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Mr. Debe Odumegwu-Ojukwu, on Sunday told that Teny Harman was his late father’s a biological daughter.

Debe, who spoke to our correspondent in Enugu, said there was no reason to question the paternity of Herman, as he (Debe) had always known about her.

He said, “That is his daughter, I knew about her; my father told me himself. The old man told me that Teny Herman was his daughter. I am his biggest and closest confidant; so there were so many things he laid bare to me which he never told others.”

Suspected child kidnappers arrested


The Ogun State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has arrested two suspected child kidnappers in different parts of Abeokuta.

The two suspects – Ronke Akindele and Life Nwem – were arrested in Eruwon and Idi-Ori areas of the city respectively when they attempted to kidnap their victims in separate incidents.

The state’s NSCDC Acting Commandant, Mr. Dele Adetarami, while parading the suspects, said Akindele attempted to kidnap one-year-old Basit, who was playing in company with his three-year-old brother in front of their house at Eruwon.

Have mercy on us, prisoners beg for parole


Some prisoners serving various prison sentences in Abeokuta, Ogun State, are begging for parole from the government.

The prisoners, who had served between 12 and 19 years, said the parole would enable them to have a second chance in life.

They promised that if the authorities could show them compassion, they would turn over a new leaf, stressing that they had learnt a lot of lessons since their incarceration.

Another Sunday attack: 10 killed as gunmen invade church, construction company in Borno


No fewer than 10 persons were killed on Sunday when unknown gunmen attacked worshippers at a Church and a road construction crew in Chibok town of Borno State, North West Nigeria.

According to a security official, who requested to remain anonymous, the attacks were likely carried out by the radical militant sect, Boko Haram.

Nigerian woman, Bunmi Awoniyi named Superior Court judge in US


California Governor Jerry Brown on Thursday named four new Superior Court judges for the Central Valley. Among the judicial appointments announced was the appointment of 48-year-old Nigerian woman, Bunmi O. Awoniyi in Elk Grove, California.

According to Centralvalleybusinesstimes, of the four, three replace judges who have retired and the fourth fills a long-standing vacancy.

Indonesian man forms unbreakable bond with a tiger


It is quite common for people to form close and loving friendships with animals.

But it is quite a different matter when that animal is a 27-stone tiger with a fondness for fighting.

Abdullah Sholeh, 31 has formed an unbreakable bond with four-year-old feline Mulan.

He regularly sleeps, plays and fights with the enormous tiger.

The pair spend every day together after Mr Sholeh helped raise her from a three-month-old cub in Malang, Indonesia.

Pregnant Woman Left To Die Over Lack of Money


A pregnant Nigerian lady has died because doctors in Port Harcourt insisted hre husband must pay N20,000, less than $150, before she was treated. Her family members are still in shock about her death, such that they are not even thinking of burying her for now.

The 34 year old woman, Ijeoma Umumadumere, nee Ahamefule, was rushed in the morning of 25th November to Garrison Clinic in Port Harcourt, when she complained of a sudden stomach pain and headache, while cooking. Her husband rushed her to the clinic on Udom street in the oil rich city. It was between 9-10 a.m. And she was five-months pregnant.

Governor Okorocha’s ADC knocks policeman unconscious


The Aide-de-Camp to the Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, Omo Gabriel, and two other police officers, on Saturday, allegedly beat up a policeman attached the state government house for delaying in opening the gate for the governor’s convoy, the PUNCH newspaper is reporting this morning.

The incident, the paper reported, occurred around 12:30 a.m, when the Governor Okorocha returned from his wife’s birthday party. The attack left the victim unconscious.

Okada rider shot by police recuperates in hospital, narrates ordeal


Mr. Atilola was shot while trying to help an emergency worker.
As he lay on the hospital bed, Adigun Atilola’s bandaged feet are immobile, but lines of pain are etched on his lean face. Two weeks ago, he was moved out of the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit into the Surgical Ward.

Mr. Atilola, a commercial motorcyclist (popularly known as Okada rider), was shot at Ilupeju, Lagos, by a police officer who was enforcing the state government’s restriction on commercial motorcyclists.

The incident, which triggered an outrage, led to youth in the area as well as other commercial motorcyclists setting up bonfires and blocking vehicular traffic for hours.

This week, the 27-year-old is scheduled to have another X-ray on his legs.

A 60-year-old man on Friday shed uncontrollable tears in court praying for the dissolution of his 32-year old marriage.

Mr. Joshua Ajala, a building contractor dragged his 53-year old wife, Dorcas, to an Orile-Agege Grade B Customary Court, Lagos on the grounds of childlessness, witchcraft and abandonment.

The visibly embittered Joshua Ajala narrated to the court how his estranged wife used witchcraft to kill a girl another woman had for him after she couldn’t give him children.
Tearfully narrating his ordeals, Ajala, alleged that three years after their marriage, his wife was not concerned about getting pregnant, as all the efforts by his late mother to get her to take local medication to aid pregnancy proved abortive.

“Ojukwu’s will that was read is fake” – Uche Ezechukwu


Less than 24 hours after it was read in the Enugu High Court in Nigeria’s South-East, the will of late Igbo leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has been dismissed as strange and unreliable by one of his closest confidants.

The name of Chief Sylvester Debe Odumegwu-Ojukwu, the 56 years old lawyer reported to be Ojukwu’s first son but who has had running battles with other family members since the old man’s death on November 26, 2011, is conspicuously missing from the will. Recognised as Ojukwu’s children in the will are Chukwuemeka Jnr, Mmegha, Okigbo, Ebele, Chineme, Afam, Nwachukwu and one Tenny Haman, who was previously unheard of.

Taraba Governor Danbaba Suntai Brain-Damaged, Can't Recognize Visitors


Governor Danbaba Suntai of Taraba State, who was seriously injured when his plane crashed on October 25 in Yola, capital of Adamawa State, has suffered extensive brain damage and failed to recognize members of a presidential delegation that visited him at a hospital in Hanover, Germany, an authoritative source has told SaharaReporters.

A source close to a senior member of the delegation described the trip to see Mr. Suntai as highly secretive. SaharaReporters learnt that members of the delegation had officially traveled to Vatican City in Rome to witness the consecration of Archbishop John Onaiyekan as a Cardinal of the Catholic Church. After the ceremony in Italy, the delegation then made a quick detour to Germany to see the injured Mr. Suntai.

Jonathan, Northern governors condole Buhari over daughter’s death


President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has commiserated with the former Head of States, General Buhari (rtd.) over the sudden death of his first daughter, Zulaihatu.

Jonathan in a condolence letter to the Buhari family prayed that God Almighty would comfort him, and grant him and members of his family the fortitude to bear the great loss.

The letter reads: “I write to extend very sincere commiserations to you and your family on the death of your eldest daughter, Zulaihatu yesterday November 29th, 2012.

Obasanjo’s call for revolution


During a recent conference on youth employment in Dakar, Senegal, former President Olusegun Obasanjo shocked his audience by openly calling for a revolution in Nigeria.

Also, it will be recalled that the former President called Nigerians to come out en masse for a Nigerian type “Arab spring (revolution)” during a workshop on economic diversification and revenue generation in December 2011 at the June 12 Cultural Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
