Private Wisconsin college cancels Pence commencement speech

A private Milwaukee college has canceled plans to have Vice President Mike Pence deliver a commencement address this weekend, citing unrest in nearby Kenosha where police shot a Black man, Jacob Blake, and two people were killed during protests that followed. Wisconsin Lutheran College said Thursday that “after further review with careful consideration of the escalating events in Kenosha,” it decided to not have Pence deliver the speech. Pence was scheduled to deliver his speech outside at the private college, which has about 1,200 students and is about 40 miles from Kenosha.

Putin Says His Men Are Standing by Ready to Go into Belarus If Protests ‘Get Out of Hand’

Vladimir Putin says he has formed a reserve of law-enforcement officers to send to Belarus to help President Alexander Lukashenko if necessary, Russian media reported Thursday. Putin said he will not deploy these forces unless “extremist elements in Belarus cross a line and start plundering.” Speaking to the state-run Rossia 1 broadcaster, he said the agents would be on standby in case pro-democracy protests strengthened. “We’ve agreed that [the reserve] will not be used until the situation starts getting out of control,” Putin said, according to The Moscow Times.Earlier in the week, Russian media reported Putin had offered to help, but it was yet unclear in what way. The Washington Post reported Wednesday that Russian journalists replaced striking Belarus journalists at the country’s state television station in mid-August, and have been spreading Russian propaganda ever since. The Belarus journalists who walked off the job have not been allowed to return, creating a vacuum that likely helped fuel Lukashenko’s highly contested presidential win, which sparked country-wide protests calling for his ouster.The Belarus population has long been anti-Russia, with a recent poll showing that 93 percent of the population against Moscow taking over the country, but Lukashenko has been demonstrably pro-Putin.Protests raged after Lukashenko’s suspicious re-election against the popular opposition candidate Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, who has become the figurehead of the protests and a target of Russian misinformation. Iran relents on IAEA inspections at two sites, ending standoff

Iran said on Wednesday it was ending a months-long standoff with the U.N. nuclear watchdog by granting it access to two sites suspected of once hosting secret activities, easing diplomatic pressure on Tehran as Washington seeks to reimpose sanctions. Rep. Joe Kennedy (D-Mass.) doesn't look like he'll be getting a promotion after all.When Kennedy announced his Democratic primary challenge to Sen. Ed Markey, there seemed to be a chance his more centrist bid might pan out, and he even got House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-Calif.) endorsement. But more and more polls keep putting Markey back on top, including two released Wednesday just days before primary ballots are counted.Markey, a progressive and co-author of the Green New Deal, has the support of 52 percent of likely Massachusetts Democratic Primary voters, a poll from the UMass Lowell Center for Public Opinion shows. Just 40 percent said they'd vote for Kennedy, putting Markey safely over Kennedy even if the 6 percent of undecided voters in the poll went in the challenger's favor.Another poll released Wednesday from the progressive think tank Data for Progress meanwhile gives Markey an 8-point advantage over Kennedy. Markey gets 46 percent support to Kennedy's 38 among likely Democratic primary voters, though a large 16 percent said they remain undecided.Earlier, albeit limited, polls indicated Markey and Kennedy's race was close, and some even gave Kennedy a sizable lead. Nicola Sturgeon's economic case for separation has received a "hammer blow" after her chief economist published figures showing Scotland's "dividend" from being part of the UK has surged to almost £2,000 per person. The General Expenditure and Revenue Scotland (Gers) figures for 2019/20 showed each Scot received £1,633 more than the UK average in public spending thanks to the Barnett Formula. This is the equivalent of 9.2 per cent of UK total spending. But tax revenue north of the Border was £308 less than the UK average, including a geographic share of North Sea oil, accounting for only 8 per cent of the UK total. The Scottish Tories said that together this meant the "Union dividend" per person has increased to £1,941, up from £1,805 the previous year, and separation would require spending cuts equivalent to the entire NHS budget. Scotland's notional deficit - the difference between spending and tax revenue - surged by £2 billion to £15.1 billion last year. This was the equivalent of 8.6 per cent of GDP - more than treble the UK figure of 2.5 per cent and nearly three times the 3 per cent required for EU membership.
