Ondo Polls: “Shoot political thugs who resist arrest,” GOC orders soldiers

The General Officer Commanding 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Major Gen. Mohammed Abubakar, has warned violence seekers to steer clear of Ondo State ahead of the Saturday governorship election.

He ordered the soldiers to shoot any anyone who resists arrest, while at the same time causing trouble during the election.

The GOC, who arrived at the 32 Artillery Brigade Akure, today to address the soldiers to be deployed for the poll said that nobody would be allowed to carry arms to the polling station while directing them to arrest anybody who violates the order.

Governor Oshiomhole Signs Death Warrant Of Unmanageable Death Row Inmates

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has signed the death warrants of two prisoners on death row, international rights groups said today.

The state’s Attorney General, Osagie Obayuwana, told Amnesty International today that Mr. Oshiomhole signed the execution warrants two weeks ago following a request from prison authorities. Edo State prison authorities reportedly complained to the governor that death row inmates involved in a recent jailbreak incident had become “unmanageable.”

Mr. Obayuwana explained that the two prisoners to be killed were convicted of murder, for which Nigeria’s laws prescribe the death penalty. Mr. Obayuwana did not provide the complete identities of the two prisoners, but said the date of the execution was at the discretion of prison authorities. He added that Mr. Oshiomhole also reviewed the cases of four other death row prisoners, and decided that two should have their sentences commuted to life imprisonment while two are to be released.

Ugochukwu Ozuah: Widow recounts five days as wife

Tears and tributes flowed freely at King’s College, Lagos, on Wednesday as family and friends held a memorial service in honour of Ugochukwu Ozuah, a 36-year-old engineer who was allegedly killed by policemen five days after his wedding.

Ozuah, who graduated from King’s College in 1993, was once the Sports prefect of the school. Some of those present at the event were; members of the King’s College Old Boy’s Association, ex-colleagues of the deceased at University of Ado Ekiti and University of Lagos, where he was pursuing a Master’s degree in Operational Research; as well as the principal and current students of the college.

Ozuah’s Chelsea Football Club jersey, inscribed with the word, ‘Hugo 10’ was seen hanging from the ceiling of the auditorium while many wore a black T-shirt displaying the deceased’s picture.

Governor Oshiomole sacks Permanent Sec

In an attempt to restore discipline in the state civil service, Governor of Edo state, Adams Oshiomhole on Wednesday sacked the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Mrs Caro Edo-Osagie.

This was confirmed in a statement issued to journalists in Benin City by the Commissioner for Information, Mr Louis Odion.

Osagie was directed to hand over all government property in her possession and immediately handover to her subordinate within 24 hours.

Suspected kidnappers and their lucky charm maker arrested in Benin

Luck has run out on a native doctor, Akugbe Ugbo, who specialises in preparing ‘goodluck’ charms for kidnappers as he was arrested by operatives of the 4 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Benin, Edo State, southsouth Nigeria.

The suspect, who was said to have prepared the charms for a kidnap gang headed by a man simply called Anthony now on the run, was paraded along with suspected kidnappers, cultists and a drug dealer.

He was arrested after two of the kidnap suspects, Jacob Umoru and Moses Otoro revealed that the charms given to them by the native doctor failed them.

Aluu killings: Height of man inhumanity to man – Soyinka

NOBEL laureate, Professor Wale Soyinka has described the brutal murder of four students of the University of Port Harcourt as the height of man inhumanity to man.

Soyinka who spoke, Thursday, in Port Harcourt at the public presentation of Port Harcourt as UNESCO World Book capital for 2014 said it was so painful watching the video clips of how the students were butchered to death.

Another worrisome thing according to him, was that the killing took place before silent spectators and passive participants in the community.

Oshiomhole fires 41 school inspectors, demotes principal

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State yesterday announced the removal of 41 zonal inspectors and chief inspectors of education and local government education officers over non-performance and negligence of duty in continuation of the on-going sanitization of the state education sector. The decision, according to him, was the outcome of a continuing performance audit.

Also, the governor announced the demotion of the Vice Principal of New Era College, Mr. S.E Akhabue, from Grade Level 15 to Grade Level 14 for being a perpetual latecomer. While meeting the affected school inspectors and officers at the Government House, the governor disclosed that the administrative details of the change in the school inspectorate would be made known in the coming days.

The State Police Commissioner, Mr. Mohammed Ndabawa, gave the names of the suspects as Segun Lawal, Felemo Solomon, Cynthia Chinwo, Ozioma Abajuo, Ikechukwu Louis and Chigozie Samuel Evans. He accused the suspects of playing major roles in the killings.


He said that an investigation aimed at arresting others involved in the killing of the four students and bringing them to book was ongoing.

LEADER of the Action Congress of Nigeria ACN Asiwaju Bola Tinubu yesterday launched a final attack on Governor Segun Mimiko describing him as an ingrate and a serial betrayer even as he disclaimed any aspiration towards fitting into Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s shoes.

Deputy President of the Senate, Chief Ike Ekweremadu, has lamented the low quality of leaders in the country.

He frowned on the educational quality of some National Assembly members, saying they can barely write their names.

Ekweremadu stated this in Awka, the Anambra State capital on Monday while delivering the 2012 Zik Lecture Series organised by the state council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists. The lecture was entitled, ‘True Federalism and the Political Ideology of the Great Zik’.

Kogi Assembly removes Speaker, deputy, others

The Kogi State House of Assembly has impeached the Speaker of the Assembly, Abdullahi Bello. Reports indicate that the deputy speaker, and 10 other principal officers were also removed from office.
